"OH THOSE DREADED CELL PHONES"
It seems that now days our lives are based on the need to know, communicate, and get to where we want to go, IMMEDIATELY. The use of cell phones while driving is epidemic. Sometime when you are riding with someone else (so they can drive) count the number of vehicles where the driver is talking on the cell phone. You have an opinion on whether this is a good or bad thing and no matter what my opinion is, it won't change yours...and thats not the point of this topic.
The point of this topic is to ask you to consider police, fire-fighters and EMS personnel when you approach and enter the scene of an accident, fire or other emergency area.
I recently had to run traffic control at a car accident on Highway 6. 20 minutes into the call I decided to count the number of drivers who were talking on their phones while they drove through the scene that had been reduced to ONE LANE TRAFFIC. 32 cars entered the scene, 16 drivers were on the phone...50%. All my people are volunteers, and should one of them get hurt it would be catastrophic to them. PLEASE, when you enter an emergency scene and you are on the phone, politely tell the person on the other end you have to set the phone down briefly or that you will call them back when you leave the scene area. This brief respite might be the effort it takes to get you through the scene without any regrettable accident that destroy many lives.
Your consideration and cooperation is appreciated.

2008 Appreciation Supper and Awards Night
The Juniata Rural Fire District held it's annual Appreciation Supper Sunday March 2 at the Plainsman Restaurant.
Vice President Lisa Heath was the emcee for the evening. Jim Schuyler led the invocation and the Fire-fighters and their guests were treated to a prime rib supper (or chicken for those who didn't want prime rib).
Following the meal the awards for 2007 were given out.
Every member of the Department was given a certificate of appreciation for their past years contributions.
Milestone awards were given to the following people.
5 year mug.....Bo Morgan
10 year sweatshirt.....Jaron Jacobitz
15 year jacket.....Mark Morgan
20 year coat.....Jim Schuyler
25 year watch.....Ed Consbruck and Gary Peisiger
Marvin Clements, representing the Juniata Village Board, gave out certificates for 25 years of service to the Village of Juniata to Ed Consbruck and Gary Peisiger. He also thanked the members for their dedication and service, and expressed his appreciation for the members being there when they are needed. These two individuals' names will be added to the plaque at the fire hall that was donated a few years back by the Village Board for that reason.
The 2008 inductees to the District Wall-of-Flame were announced. The "veterans" inductee was Gilbert "Gib" Mousel (pre 1980 member). Ed Consbruck was inducted as a 25 year member. Bill Consbruck was inducted by at large vote. These additions bring the number of inductees to 48 since 1992. Their names will be added to the "Wall-of-Flame" plaque located at the fire hall.
The "Firefighter of the Year" award was given to Rod Hoppe. This award is nominated by the members of the Department, and this is the third year of the award.
That concluded the evening's festivities and the members of the Department gave a round of applause to the Recruit/Retention Committee for setting up the dinner.
